
The Art of Coaching a Group and Keeping It Personal
Group motivation and energy are expected from an instructor, but connection and personalization make a truly great coach. How do we become that great coach and connect to our participants as well as connect them to each other in a small-group training environment? Explore the science of connection and learn tools to facilitate personalization to set yourself apart in the group-training space. Then, put these tools into practice in a team-training workout to experience the connection firsthand.
Learning Objectives
- Identify and define the two pillars of small-group training coaching.
- Discuss the research study “Mere Belonging: The Power of Social Connections” (Walton et al. 2012) and explain how it applies to the pillar of connection.
- Integrate the ideas of the four coaching connectors into daily coaching practice.
- Describe the foundations of self-determination theory and identify differences between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation.
- List the three basic psychological needs for success.
- Empower clients by applying tools that invoke the three needs for success.
