Breaking Body Barriers
Fitness and movement should be for everyone who wants to participate. However, because of our personal body stories, we may approach our students with unconscious prejudices and create an experience that is not inclusive. Let’s uncover these biases head on and break down the seen and unseen barriers, so we can create a new, positive narrative about our bodies and theirs.
Learning Objectives
- Define weight bias and fat-shaming.
- Recognize clients’ body stories and identify their possible origins.
- Recognize the feelings and emotions clients may have about their bodies and how this may affect clients’ “performance.”
- Identify and dismantle the “us vs. them” mentality.
- Define “inclusive language” and explain the importance of its usage.
