Functional Movement Patterns for Older Adults

The seven fundamental movement patterns can be incredibly beneficial for older adults of all ages and functional levels. In this workshop, we will cover techniques and strategies for applying the “Big 3” patterns—deadlift, squat and lunge—to this diverse group, including: teaching strategies; simple assessments to determine which clients “earn the right” to load these patterns; how to regress and progress each movement; how to deal with chronic conditions and orthopedic issues; ways to integrate muscle power training; and programming variables. There will be a considerable amount of small-group and partner work to facilitate the learning.

Learning Objectives


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Name the seven fundamental movement patterns.
  2. Name the eight levels on the Hierarchy of Functional Aging.
  3. Describe how to properly perform a deadlift pattern. Explain common issues older adults have when performing a deadlift pattern and give strategies to correct or overcome these issues.
  4. Describe how to properly perform a squat pattern. Explain common issues older adults have when performing a squat pattern and give strategies to correct or overcome these issues.
  5. Describe how to properly perform a lunge pattern. Explain common issues older adults have when performing a lunge pattern and give strategies to correct or overcome these issues.
