After the Injury: Functional Training Periodization

Anyone who has worked out consistently chomps at the bit to get back in the game quickly after an injury. Come learn how to do just that for all rehabbed fitness levels (after medical clearance) by creating periodized workouts and using some staple and common accessories. We will review a few common-case scenarios and you will learn how to make your clients masters of movements every step along the way with simple progressive programs. Week by week, they will anticipate stepping into new movement opportunities with a great mental attitude to develop and garner the mobility and strength they never thought would be possible again!

Leigh Wierichs, MFA, MS

Leigh Wierichs, MFA, MS, is a fitness industry veteran with over 20 years of experience specializing in education for group fitness instructors and trainers, military fitness, wellness education and programming, facility management and design, and sales. She holds a Master of Science in kinesiology and a Master of Fine Arts in dance. She is currently the global training and education manager for Life Fitness and has dedicated her career to promoting movement and exercise as a part of a vibrant and healthy life.

Susane Pata

Susane Pata travels around the world delivering fitness education, as a global master instructor/presenter for TRX, Life Fitness and Trigger Point. When not traveling she trains clients, instructs group fitness sessions and writes to strongly advocate for creative, progressive and smart fitness programming.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define the nature of injury and the repair process.
  2. List three of the most common injury areas that therapists diagnose/treat.
  3. Explain how to design a specific communication plan with clients who have lost motivation due to injury.
  4. Describe how to implement key “comeback” movement assessments for effective exercise programming.
  5. Practice and coach key exercises for continued rehab and injury prevention and for strength development in “weak link” areas.
  6. Organize a periodization schedule for an effective, injury-free strength training regimen.

  3. Take the test. (You must score 80% to pass. If you do not pass, you may retake the test.)
  4. Print your certificate of completion.
