Michael Mantell
Michael R. Mantell earned his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania and his M.S. at Hahnemann Medical College, where he wrote his thesis on the psychological aspects of obesity. His career includes serving as the Chief Psychologist for Children’s Hospital in San Diego, and as the founding Chief Psychologist for the San Diego Police Department. He is the Senior Fitness Consultant for Behavioral Sciences for the American Council on Exercise, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Council on Active Aging, the Chief Behavior Science Consultant for the Premier Fitness Camp at Omni La Costa, a best-selling author of three books including the just released 25th Anniversary updated edition of his 1988 original “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff, P.S. It’s All Small Stuff.” He is also an international behavior science fitness keynote speaker, an Advisor to numerous fitness-health organizations, and is featured in many worldwide fitness/health publications. He’s been featured on Oprah, Good Morning America, the Today Show, and has been a weekly contributor to many major news organizations including Fox and ABC News. He has presented programs at IDEA, ACE, Asia Fitness, ICAA, ABC, Medical Fitness and others. Dr. Mantell is a nationally sought after behavioral science coach for business leaders, elite amateur and professional athletes, individuals and families. Learning Objectives
After taking this course, you should be able to:
- Understanding evidence-backed cognitive psychological skills for effectively looking beyond outer appearances to identify accepted signs of emotional disruption within clients.
- Describe the contemporary science of “compassionomics,” as practiced in health care, and say how it helps professionals connect with clients who are facing emotional distress.
- Develop a working knowledge of and be able to apply “Language of Caring Heart to Head to Heart” communication skills.
- Apply the mindset and skill set of empathy, not sympathy, in communications with clients.
- Understand emotional intelligence in order to effectively motivate, encourage and communicate with clients during this time of emotional turbulence, particularly as related to COVID-19.
- Explain why it is skillful to avoid “don’ts” when communicating with clients who are displaying explicit or implicit signs of emotional stress.
