2026 IDEA Fitness Journal Issue 5, Quiz 3 – Why Kids Drop Out of Sport

2026 IDEA Fitness Journal Issue 5, Quiz 3 – Why Kids Drop Out of Sport

Description: Youth sport dropout is often attributed to factors such as burnout, pressure, or lack of motivation. In practice, disengagement is rarely caused by a single issue. It reflects how young athletes experience training environments over time, including how programs are structured, how feedback is delivered, and how social dynamics influence participation.

This course examines the underlying factors that contribute to participation decline and provides a framework for improving long-term engagement. Participants will explore how mismatches between program design and developmental stage affect motivation, how confidence and perceived ability influence behavior, and how coaching practices shape athlete experience.

Emphasis is placed on practical application. Coaches will learn how to adjust training structure, feedback, and session design to better align with how young athletes develop and engage. The course provides actionable strategies to support retention while maintaining performance standards, helping fitness professionals create environments that encourage continued participation and long-term development.
