2026 IDEA Fitness Journal Issue 3, Quiz 3 - When Clients Know What to Do but Still Don’t Do It
This continuing education course examines the intention–action gap in fitness coaching—the well-documented phenomenon in which clients express clear goals and strong intentions yet struggle with consistent follow-through. Drawing from behavioral science, self-determination theory, habit research, and behavioral economics, this course explores why motivation alone is insufficient to sustain physical activity participation.
Fitness professionals will examine how friction, environmental cueing, identity alignment, and perceived competence influence behavior execution. The course provides evidence-informed strategies to reduce barriers, design for variability, and improve client adherence without increasing pressure or relying on fluctuating motivation. Participants will leave with practical tools to close the gap between intention and action within real-world coaching environments.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Define the intention–action gap and explain why intentions alone are weak predictors of sustained behavior.
2. Describe how motivation fluctuates and why reliance on motivation alone undermines long-term adherence.
3. Identify common sources of friction that reduce client follow-through in fitness programs.
4. Apply implementation intention strategies (“if–then” planning) to improve exercise consistency.
5. Explain how identity alignment and perceived competence influence sustained participation.
6. Design coaching systems that prioritize repeatability, contingency planning, and participation tracking.
